Unconnected, a poem will drift in the slightest breeze
rolling across the landscape aimlessly.
Some poems hang like dirty laundry
although the metaphor is intended to be invisible.
And once crushed,
it takes patient determination to unfold a poem.

If stretched tightly across the drum,
with the excess pulled off the side
a poem will be airtight,
and keep things fresh
unless poked by inept fingers.
