An analysis of unified memory architecture

Download 100K Adobe Acrobat PDF file Last update: October 1995

This paper walks through a detailed performance analysis of a hypothetical Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) system. It concludes that the broad system-level performance of a UMA PC, measured using a test like WinStone, is 10% to 15% slower than an equivalently configured standard architecture system. The paper further discusses the effect of faster CPUs and new memory types on the UMA price/performance equation. References to DRAM pricing etc. are out of date but the general analysis and trend still apply to today's market. 6 pages. 1 diagram, 7 equations, 5 graphs.

System performance analysis model v3.0

Download 52K Excel 5.x Spreadsheet Last update: November 1995

This spreasheet generates price/performance comparisons of different standard and UMA system configurations. It is useful for modeling performance to evaluate main memory type, cache type, and graphics architecture tradeoffs. The assumptions driving the spreadsheet are based on 1995 market conditions. Substitute your own assumptions to generate new comparisons.

UMA Redux: the 7MB Case in Detail

Download 37K Adobe Acrobat PDF file Last update: December 1995

This paper analyzes the applicability of Unified Memory Architecture to entry-level systems, in particular to Windows 95 based systems with 8MB memory. It also describes the tradeoffs involved in different 12MB system memory approaches. 4 pages. 1 table.

This article in EE Times presents a list of the Top Ten limitations which have crippled Unified Memory Architecture. The problems discussed include poor price/performance, significant security holes, and long term trends such as increasing CPU clock speeds.

ProMotion Gamma Correction and Chroma Correction

Go to Technical note (weblink url) Last update: August 1996

This brief paper describes gamma correction and Alliance's proprietary chroma correction, two features which are used to control display colors. Alliance ProMotion controllers can separately control graphics desktop and motion video window colors through the gamma and chroma features.
